You’ve probably been advised, at some point in your life, to ‘get your priorities straight’. Whether that means something as simple as studying for an exam instead of watching television or putting time with family ahead of a night out, prioritising can often be difficult.

And as essential as prioritising is in our personal life, it is doubly important in our professional lives. After all, while neglecting something at home might result in a backlog of laundry, putting the wrong thing on the backburner at work could have lasting consequences.

This month we’re talking about what to keep in mind when considering business Wi-Fi, and how to ensure you’re making the most of the technology that is at your disposal. And one thing you may not be is partitioning your Wi-Fi network to maximise productivity.

For example, if an Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) system is the main focus of your business, and you rely on it to capture customer data or payments fast and effectively, you’ll want to be sure that nothing comes between the system and the Wi-Fi connectivity it requires to function. Likewise, if your company has a large workforce, you’ll probably be keen to make sure that those people who require connectivity to perform their role have the bandwidth to do it.

Many people simply don’t realise that the way they use the internet has an effect on others’ experiences, but if you’re a graphic designer trying to send a large file out for urgent approval to meet a print deadline and someone is using your guest network to download a large presentation, you risk an unhappy client and everything that this implies for the business.

Split the difference

The best way to take charge of the connectivity people can access is to partition your network. Essentially, this means splitting it into different parts, each with a different megabyte allowance. So, for example, you might specify that for every 100mb your company uses, 50% is assigned for use only by directors. After that, you can set allowances for different levels of staff, as well as guests. The best part is that, without the appropriate permissions, no-one that hasn’t been authorised can use bandwidth not assigned to them. This makes sure that essential day-to-day tasks can be carried out efficiently and effectively, and your business can run productively.
