Keeping safe from cyber attacks

At the beginning of the year, we took an in-depth look at the various ways businesses can protect themselves against the ever-present threat of cyber-crime, but statistics released recently by the UK Government show that most firms still have a way to go before they are strong enough to withstand a cyber-attack.

Earlier this month, the Department for Culture, Media & Sport revealed that almost half of all UK businesses that took part in its recent survey as part of the National Cyber Security Programme have identified at least one cyber-security breach or attack in the last 12 months.

The findings formed part of the 2017 Cyber Security Breaches Survey Report, which highlighted four in ten businesses affected by an attack reported an outcome such as a temporary loss of files or network access (23%) or systems becoming corrupted (20%).

The true impact of cyber-attacks

The average business faces costs of £1,570 as a result of a breach, rising to £19,600 for the average large firm. The most common breaches relate to staff receiving fraudulent emails – evident in 72% of cases where firms identified a breach or attack.

Statistics like these are the reason why, when we call firewalls the unsung heroes of your business, we really do mean it. Take the time to configure your firewall correctly and you can rest easy in the knowledge that, while you go about your day to day business, it will diligently be keeping your critical business data safe and secure from attackers. 

But while viruses, spyware and malware (33%), people impersonating the organisation in emails or online (27%) and ransomware (17%) are among the other most common security breaches, it’s important to remember that having strong security systems in place is only the start.

Education, education, education

The awareness and vigilance of your staff is just as important to your business’ overall cyber-security as the security systems you implement, and taking the time to make sure that every employee is aware of your policies could make all the difference between becoming a victim or fending off an attack. This can range from knowing what exactly is appropriate to post on social media to how to deal with phone calls from unknown sources.
