Losing time to office tech fails

UK workers are losing an average of nine working days per year due to technology and IT failures in the office, according to the UK’s largest independent online tech retailer, Ebuyer.
Losing time to office tech fails
Yes you read that correctly, nine working days per employee! To a company made up of 30 staff, that’s 270 days a year down the drain, which seems difficult to fathom.
In an ever-increasing digital world, it’s no surprise that internet connectivity issues were the most common IT failures in the UK, with almost 50% of workers claiming this has affected their work in the last six months. Wi-Fi has recently grown into a commodity item, but with that comes challenges. The jump between your home router and enterprise Wi-Fi is vaster than most would assume; if your business has more than ten devices connected to your wireless network at any one time then you really should consider upgrading to a commercial wireless network solution to avoid downtime.
Computers and laptops crashing was the second most common IT issue (41 per cent), followed by the printer breaking (40 per cent).
As firms are looking to prepare for GDPR compliance by May 2018, a worrying number of workers claim they have accidentally sent an email to the wrong recipient, with a further number of staff losing time at work due to a cyber security breach. Many workers have clicked a link on a spam email, with many IT teams not equipped to deal with the fallout of a cyber-attack such as ransomware.
The figures in these findings are likely to have a huge impact on businesses, especially SMEs. Ensuring your IT equipment is regularly updated will help you stay on top of systems crashing, and having your data backed up regularly and off-site is an absolute must to avoid critical data loss.
How do you tackle your IT support and cyber security? If you have an in-house team, is there enough resource to address your staff’s technical difficulties? Your IT department could benefit from an external IT support team to take the day-to-day issues off their plate, allowing them to get stuck into the more important projects. Alternatively, if you already outsource your IT services and your tech fails are still prohibiting your staff from working efficiently then perhaps it’s time to look elsewhere.
